Feature request: match partial string when entering series

When I'm adding a series manually, the current behaviour matches series names starting with the characters I type - however, I often can't recall offhand if I've entered the other books in the series beginning with an article or not, or if I've shortened the official series title, and in these cases partial string match would be helpful.

Would it be feasible to do this, or would it be impractical with large libraries with possibly hundreds of entries to match? I have set up a custom column for genre, and there Calibre does match partial strings, so the feature does exist at least for some column types, but looks like the basic set (author name, series, etc) matches only the beginning.
