Afaik all the old Nook for PC apps (which have win7 conpatibility) won't download anything they just open a separate browser window and you read there. Nook app for Windows supposedly can run on win 8.1. If thats true you might be able to get your magazines that way and steps should be the same or similar to using the win10/11 version I have.
The phone already being rooted would make that way the easiest to retrieve the files. You might just need some router settings changed to get the phone to connect. Personally when I encounter problems with connections I ditch 5ghz and only try to use the old reliable 2.4ghz.
