As mentioned, you could have used a USB flash drive, or something else. Check out
Unetbootin, for example, which is custom made for this kind of thing.
Anyway, it should be clear this isn't a point against linux in favor of the others; I'd hate to think how hard it would be to try to install Windows without an optical drive or network connection.
