It was about version 14 where the validation wizard became really good, and version 15 increased the speed of validation a lot...a "normal" font (with 10 or fewer contours per glyph) takes about 10 seconds for a 500 glyph font. Specialty fonts with more than 30 or so contours per glyph still take quite a long time.

You can often run two passes of the wizard with auto-fix on, and end up with very few manual fixes. The reason to run two is that the order of fixes means that pass one may fix multiple problems on a glyph that results in very minor problem remaining, but the fix for that kind of problem has already been run in that pass. So, the second pass cleans these up.
