Yes, the style guide to use depends on context:
  • Writing for a US newspaper or magazine or website.
  • Writing for a UK newspaper or magazine or website.
  • Writing for a local paper.
  • An author needs their own style guide based on USA or UK usage.
  • A publisher needs their own style guide, perhaps more than one depending on Author origins and target markets.

Except for someone working for one newspaper, or an author SP, no one style guide is the right one, but you can't use more than one for any particular project / publication / series.
