Anyone that doesn't like there being more than one linux distribution is free to not use any of them.

Anyone that expects to be able to update one distribution to a different one is free to implement that.

I keep a separate /home partition and have never really trusted a major update anyway and tend to do a fresh install, usually to a new disk. (Which allows me to go running back to the previous OS if need be with minimal pain.)
