I'm a fan of Jacka's... really enjoyed his Alex Verus series. I recently read An Inheritance of Magic as a library loan. Starts a bit slow, imo... but that's largely due to world building, which I found rather interesting in its own right. It starts picking up in due course, and the second book continues to improve upon the first's foundation.
This is all a long-winded way to say "I recommend An Inheritance of Magic" and at $3 CDN I'll probably be picking it up myself (despite having already read it.)
