Shameless plug: You might find my PNGOptimizer Sigil plugin helpful, if you want to convert the png files to jpg files to reduce their file sizes. It can optionally use pngquant for lossy compression.
(To use pngquant you'll need to manually modify the preference file.)

Thanks, I'll give it a whirl. I have quite a few books with huge PNG cover images which shrink to almost nothing when converted to JPG, but it's quite a hassle to convert them. Anything that can make it easier is worthwhile checking out for me.
