I did also try waiting around 30s after ejecting before unplugging but even then the screen didn't change.
Recently (MS keeps messing with things) that can take longer for a lot of books for the USB buffer to flush and the device to really recognize that it has been ejected. (I also am seeing longer times for Windows to discover it connected)
