Yes, it is used everywhere except on e-ink Kindle devices. Its presence is the reason why it has never been possible to remove DRM from books downloaded to Fire tablets.

I don’t know why Amazon has waited so long to bring it to Kindle devices. But strengthening their DRM seems to be a priority lately so it was just a matter of time.
I don’t think it is a coincidence that it is being done in conjunction to blocking a jailbreak exploit since a jailbreak would be required to defeat this DRM enhancement.
