If they are marked as EBOK, you might be able to get a cover image to download with correct ASIN - but if it is not also in your Kindle library bets are off. I think I tried it awhile back with non-Amazon content, and it does not work.
With pre-MTP Kindles, and the 2022 Scribe, calibre will side load and manage cover images. But it doesn't need to if they are marked as PDOC.

I’ve seen a lot of comments about MTP lately, but so far I’ve had no issues connecting with an MTP client on my Mac. Calibre works just fine too, all my ebooks and periodicals can load onto my 12th gen PW and behave exactly like they did on my previous Kindle.
I can even see the system and cover-bug folders with the .jpg files in them.
As a quick test, I also loaded two ebooks: one marked as PDOC and one as EBOK, and both showed the covers without any problem. (For context, the EBOK was just a random blog post I downloaded as an EPUB and converted to KFX, so it’s not an actual Amazon book.)
That said, just a heads-up: my Kindle stays offline and is running firmware 5.17.1.0.4, so things might be different once it’s connected to the internet.
