Without input from the OP, I'm just guessing of course, but what if the "normal" search value was copied from somewhere else and IT contains a null character? Would the escaping of that text cause any issues?

EDIT: that makes no sense either, I'd guess, as the OP indicated the search caused no crashes when run on an empty epub. But does an empty epub have a css files?
