Co-incidentally last night I was given back a reMarkable I'd given away (I'd got an Elipsa and gave it away eventually as it was 100% replaced by a Sage).

The owner had got a Sage because she liked her husband's Sage.

Her parting comment: "It's no use for ebooks and the PC software is terrible".

I see it's had Firmware updates to add local handwriting to text.

PIN

If you put a PIN on a Kobo and forget you can factory reset. All the books etc wiped, but you do do backups?

If you put a PIN on reMarkable the factory reset is inaccessible. Depending on exact firmware or model you have to hack firmware via 3rd party USB tools over USB Networking (Windows beta, might work on Linux, Mac ARM fails) or take it apart and add a hardware interface.

The reMarkable 1 & 2 run same FW, similar too small storage, PDF only, and networking only (WiFi or USB), no USB MTP or Mass storage. Same eink as Elipsa.

Further thoughts
I think the Boox Go 10.3 is a better idea than the "Walled Garden" Kindle Scribe (both 300 dpi). https://www.amazon.co.uk/BOOX-Tablet...dp/B0D4DFT3W3/
But it's £380! Seriously better than a reMarkable.
So I bought a TCL Nxtpaper 11 instead for PDFs to complement the Sage. It's so goof I later bought the Nxtpaper 40 4G phone and then the TCL Nxtpaper 14. The Nxtpaper 11 is better for notes being smaller (10.9″ and 16:10 aspect). The Nxtpaper 14 is 14.25″ and nice 3:2 aspect. Best ever for PDFs (Magazines, text books, data sheets) or proofing 2 up paperback sized PDFs for POD in landscape.

So for novels (epubs) I've not found anything bigger than 8″ Sage that is any good. I'm convinced the 10″ and larger eink and the colour eink (Kaleido and Gallery have different serious issues) are pointless.

I narrowly avoided Sony / Fujitsu digital paper models. The reMarkable 1 & 2 are really for that market.

Edit:
Yes, the returned reMarkable had an evil PIN. 8 hours later I was texted it. People have bought second hand reMarkables or forgotten PIN and discovered they have a brick. Even legitimate sellers sometimes can be contacted, or the seller might have forgotten so sold it. Not all are stolen.
