The things to double check:

Do you have the driver configured with the calibre columns to use as tags.
With the device connected, click on the DOWN ARROW besides the Device icon and select configure this device. On the Collections, covers and uploads tab make sure that your columns are listed in the Collections columns field.
If you want to read kepub formats, ensure that the Use Kobo viewer for EPUB books is checked. To further control this, you can control the conversion through the field Template to decide conversions
In calibre preferences ensure that Automatic Metadata management is snabled. Preferences | Import/Export, Sending books to devices, Metadata management is set to Automatic management

With these settings in effect, on each device connection you should see the series info and the collections on the Kobo updated to match calibre.
