Im sure you have probably tried this, but just in case, have you powered off the Kindle completely and then re-started it? My Kindle Voyage would sometimes get odd glitches, one of which sounds very similar to what you are describing, but powering off completely and re-starting usually cleared the problem.
As I say I'm sure you've probably already tried this but it's sometimes worth stating the obvious
