Hi, I don't know if I can help but a couple of things did stand out.

I have monocular vision and am "legally bling". I use bookstore quite a bit. I don't use it but I'm pretty sure BRF is braille. I can read it but haven't since I was in school.

I use a mac and a kindle Oasis. I know it's old school but I download the epub, send it to calibre, convert and send it to my plugged in kindle.

I have a kobo. I got it to play with because I had hoped that the experimental browser might make it easier to get bookstore books into a reader. It worked but it wasn't easy at all. I went back to mac/caliber/oasis. Maybe someone with a newer kobo could comment on the browser because I haven't tried in at least 5 years.

Also, there's a great app called VoiceDream Reader that is able to access bookshare. It does text, text to speech and audiobooks. I keep it on my phone in case I get stuck somewhere and want something to read or listen to.
I don't swim much so the waterproof factor for a device has never been a concern for me so I'm no help there.
Good luck on your quest.
