So it can properly scale the image if you tell it to keep its aspect ratio.

Any image viewer on your machine should be able to give you the dimensions of the image. Or use Add Existing and add the image file to your epub in Sigil then double-click on it in Sigil's BookBrowser and the Image Tab that opens can give you the size as well as color depth and other information.
