deleted all the preferences, run Welcome Wizard again - default format is still mobi
No Kindle at all, just generic device

I haven't run the Welcome Wizard in the last ten years and have changed / added devices many times. I use
Preferences: Behavior. and
Preferences Sending..to Devices Although, that only applies before you first connect a device. From then on, Connect the devise: On the device icon: Configure. (Calibre stores YOUR settings for each device type you use)
