I temporarily stop (not kill!) the gvfs-mtp-volume-monitor in System Monitor -> Processes before connecting USB that uses MTP, because there is no other way with caja and Mate desktop I can find. Other desktop/file manager combinations do allow auto-mount of USB devices to be disabled in Control panel or File manager.
It auto-respawns if you "kill" it. Find it on the list, right click and "stop".
Older Kindles use Mass Storage, so are no problem. Android also uses MTP after version 3. MS developed for the Zune, so uniquely later versions of windows with Explorer MTP support allow more than one program to connect. I think the earliest windows for Zune support only supported it via Media Player Library, but I might be wrong.
