Most electronic ink ebook devices do the black flash between pages. There is one device that allows you to toggle this on and off, but I can't remember which one it is. The reason for the black flash is to prevent ghosting of text from the previous page, which can make the text harder to see, especially with smaller fonts.
I was able to ignore the flash within the first couple of weeks of owning my 505. Some people can't stand it. Your experience will probably fall somewhere in between.
