After running ahead, I dropped the ball on my doorstop challenge in May and June, when I failed to complete Les Misérables. It was a combination of poor timing and a bad decision, which I knew was not a good idea at the time. I got off to a reasonable start, but I also committed to a concurrent read of The Woman in White for a book group and as I suspected, I couldn't handle two long 19th century novels at the same time. And I ended up disliking Woman in White anyway.
There were other factors involved; most especially it was probably not a good idea to try to listen to such a long book. That said, I was not in the right frame of mind for the various digressions and irrelevancies. I started to skim and finally, on June 30 which was the nominal deadline, I realized there was no point to continuing to push through. However, I really would like to try it again, some day not soon! so I pushed it back to my TBR shelf instead of marking it DNF. I think I'll skip the protracted introduction concerning Bishop Myriel, though, and I'll mostly if not entirely read it.
Moving on with relief. I have a tentative plan to try to pick up some time with the remaining doorstops and to see if I can slot in another at the end. My other challenges are in good shape.
