I thought:
1: That adding Playstore wasn't hard
2: That there were Amazon versions of those.
3. People buy the Fire Tablet as a Tablet, not to read books or listen to stuff, yet it's one of the most popular by volume. Of course they don't make much profit from the sales, unlike the iPad, where majority of price is profit.
Curiously I have an Android phone (as do others in the house) and we don't have WhatsApp, Instagram etc. We do have other apps.
