I've not used separate "Annotations" plugin feature for years. I use the Copy Annotations etc in Kobo Utilities, as I don't want them in Calibre. I save text files in the source directories that the import to Calibre to make an epub started from.

I'd have zero use for writing annotations to a Kobo, because it's purely for proofing / edit workflow. I never look them up on the Kobo after making them.
