Hah. Shudda known better. Going to the smallest setting in the line spacing adjustment, I was appalled to see the lines of my text jump apart. I kid you not. So the adjustment was only to get even more wasted space. I can't imagine what the largest spacing does, because once I realized I could recover the old setting I backed out of that section with haste. I don't want to do something irreparable.

I was using different fonts to mitigate this issue previously. Since then I've moved to Koreader, but I guess this thread can still be useful for someone:
