Kobo has been doing this for a long time, and all automatic updates from all companies should be done this way, so that problems can be found (and the roll out stopped) before they get propagated to huge numbers of people.

I know, I'm an oldtimer.

Ditto.
That said, normally we in Europe are frequently the ones who get most updates pretty fast as we form a large test base (many users, good infrastructure, etc.). As this is currently not the case, and I received info that Australian roll-out is started, it just did make me wonder why.
I've seen this behavior also on my Pixel-phone: normally we get on the 5th of every month security updates. If they fail to arrive, you know there are issues, and big trouble when they are not yet there after a week.
As we are all curious what will happen in a possible future melt between kobo/tolino, I was asking myself whether this was a preparation phase for the migration towards 1 code base.
