I very much appreciate calibre, despite several of its failings. And of course a bunch of folk have added to calibre, taking their own extra steps for control or enhancement.
I am very much about control and enhancement. In fact, many of my ebook related programs leverage aspects of calibre, work with it.
In the end though, it is simply about me doing things my way. I have my own view of how things should be or be done, and I automate almost everything on my PC, my way. I enjoy the power that gives me, and take some measure of joy in the creation. I also like to understand what is going on, and not being a Python coder etc, means I have to do it myself to get enough of that.
And of course, there is the challenge.
