Another example is A Series of Unfortunate Events. The movie was nothing great. But the TV show was able to flush out the books and do a much better job of telling the story because there was more time to do so. The TV show did the books justice while the movie did not.

One issue today is also (imho) that movies, TV series, videogames etc.. tends to grow long expectations by annuncing them very early (like, years before release), and that's would be very rare to satisfy too.
Amazon made a TV serie from "The Loop" graphic novel by Simon Stålenhag, I'd watched few episodes but decided to not wreck its memories from the book; the upcoming movie seems nice instead.
