The TV show is not a direct remake of the original. It's something of a reimagining of what that character might be like today (along with the sorts of technology and tricks the character might employ). It was excellent and Redmayne was fabulous. From what I understand, it was not intended as a multi-season show but was written with an ambiguous ending that would easily permit it to continue and when it was so well received it was an easy decision to green light a second season.
