Oddly during that same time period in July, 2010 B&N dropped the price of the original Nook (the one with the eInk & LCD screens) from $259 to $149 though that did involve losing the 3G capability.

As the NYT article referred to it, a price war.
But that doesn't really fit the continual narrative that Amazon sells ereaders as a loss leader?
