It works fine if I just import one book at a time by selecting the individual Kindle file from a folder (Kindle has 1 folder per book). The title is imported correctly.
But I have hundreds of books.
If I use the "multiple folder" Calibre option it also works in terms of importing them (they are readable, have a front page etc), but in Calibre the titles aren't correct - just a string of random characters.
Any tips on how to make this work (or is it a bug?)

You need to do it a different way, With the KFX eBooks in the directory they were download to with K4PC (and all the other files in place as well), drag/dop the .kfx files into calibre. You can do multiple files at once. But do not do too many. Yes this will take longer, but it will work. Try 50 and then check them that they all imported correctly and the DRM was removed. If they all works, just do 50 at a time until you are done.
DO NOT DRAG/DROP OR IMPORT A DIRECTORY.
