Semi-automated. The vcom seems to be more critical on the colour Kobos which do not have removable internal storage. As for the image, it is an image of the entire µSD card from the "unused" space at the start to the 3 partitions and the unused space at the end. As far as I know, the vcom and waveform tables are stored in the "unused" space.
I am not certain of the process that was used to made the original Nia image work on the Rev C Nia.
