There is a jailbreak that might work that doesn't need to be registered. I forget the name. You still cannot download Amazon eBooks. So it's not all that useful other then installing KOReader to read ePub.
This is why I'd be very careful as to where I bought a used Kindle. Ebay would be right out. I've read of many getting a blacklisted Kindle.
I did buy my Kindle Touch from Goodwill back before they switched to doing bidding.
