The new panel view implementation was an interesting task.
You can take a look at the PR for details, but it was quite a journey to figure out how to make it work properly in all cases, with undocumented bugs in the JPG renderer for MOBI/AZW3. Amazon is unlikely to ever fix them.
Sure glad you can disable it too, accidental activations are annoying. And don't get me started on the fast page turn in KFX manga accidental activations...
