Please note that all my comments represent my opinion.
For me, Kobo ereaders are the superior device. The open nature so I don't need to jailbreak if I want to play with KOReader or Plato, the add-ons such as NickelMenu, the ability to patch the behaviour using KoboPatcher. Other things such as font selection, line spacing, margins. Every time I use a Kindle, I end up asking why does a Kindle insist that margins on an eInk device should be so wide? Attempting to emulate the appearance of a paperback book?
The ability to easily edit an ePub also makes a Kobo a superior choice. That Amazon does not eat their own dog food (try sending an Amazon format ebook via StK or to Amazon KDP) is yet another reason for not owning a Kindle.
As for reading a lot in a year? For the month of April, 2025, my reading stats say that I finished 121 books and from Jan. 01, 2025 to April 30, 2025, I finished 398 books. Admittedly most of these are fiction so light reads and not much need to stop and think about the concepts being presented. There were also 10 or so books read with a granddaughter on a Kobo Libra Colour which is great for kids picture books where the sins of a Kaleido 3 screen are not noticeable. OTOH, keeping her younger sister from taste testing the KLC was an ongoing issue.
