I see..

Just to be clear my setup is:

1. The "library" is stored on a NAS which is configured as a RAID-5 with a local external backup of the whole NAS weekly to an attached external drive.

2. The DB is stored on a Windows desktop and shared to other devices that want to access the library using the Location environmental.

3. The DB is backed up to the NAS via a nightly batch job on the desktop.

Unsupported but it is working for me. For quite a few years actually.

Not sure why am not seeing the metadata files but since everything is working I am not bothering to investigate.
