I literally followed the step by step procedure from the Kindle Modding Wiki for WinterBreak. The only item not mentioned that I did was to check each time to make sure no update files had been downloaded before ejecting my PW4 and if one was found to delete it. More important now that 5.18.1 has been released.
I use 7-Zip to extract the WinterBreak.tar.gz file by digging down to the level where the files show and then copying them to a directory (oddly called WinterBreak, let no one accuse me of originality  ) on my desktop. I enabled airplane mode and rebooted my PW4 and then copied the contents of the WinterBreak directory to the root of the Kindle's exposed storage. Safely ejected the PW4 and then opened the Kindle Store turning off airplane mode when requested. The WinterBreak icon showed up and I tapped on it.
Followed the next steps copying the update_hotfix_universal.bin to the root of the Kindle storage, installing it and running the hotfix booklet.
Next was downloading the kindlehf versions of MRPI and KUAL and following the directions to install them.
Downloaded the kindlehf version of KOReader and used ;log mrpi to install it.
Repeated the procedure on my second PW4. |
Thank you, but I did not get any results despite following the steps on the kindle modding site many times. As a last resort, I threw the device away :-(
