Calibre crashes on Mac mini

Calibre 8.X crashes on my M2 Mac mini (Sequoia 15.4.1) every time I try to run it. Calibre 7.21 works fine. One of the behaviors is that it seems to take a very long time to load 8.X compared to 7.21, ~60 seconds as compared to ~25 seconds previously. Sooner or later, 8.X will crash to desktop and give me the Mac error report.

One thing that crashes it instantly is to type something into the search bar. Type the first or second letter and it crashes. I have removed all the plugins, with no effect.

Any ideas?
