The JobSpy plugin has a "Tickle Auto-Adder to Wake Up" feature, it's in the "Tools that are Behavior Related" sub menu.

You could give it a try. Windows has a history of losing track of File System Watch services.

That is not the way calibre "just works".

By 'fix a my fairly large library' I assume you mean via the Restore database feature, or rebuild a library via Add Books from folders. I've been using calibre for well over a decade and I have never needed to do either on any of my libraries.

I have 9 libraries, one has over 170,000 'books', another (my Test library) has 81 custom columns. I also make extensive use of calibre://URL links within and between calibre libraries and with other applications and links to other application objects from within calibre.
