Unfortunately you do need 2FA these days. You didn't in the past, but Amazon does not make it possible to create and/or register an account without it anymore. I have tried.
I don't buy books from Amazon and never have, so I don't actually care about registration aside from cases where it's helpful or necessary for the jailbreak and other hacks to work.
TBH I'd be grateful for technical instructions should they exist, not a debate about whether it's worth bothering or being curious
