It's been a while since you wrote this, but I can confirm Amazon still do price-match to free.
I'd set one of my short stories, a lead-in to a first-in-series, as 99c on different platforms---including Amazon.
For some reason Amazon was still selling as free. It bugged for two months before I realised I hadn't fixed every platform to 99c. I'd forgotten Google Play. That fixed it, but it also killed off the future downloads from freebie-seekers.
That was earlier this year.
