If you have your Kindle registered and the firmware is <5.18.1, you can use WinterBreak to jailbreak your Kindle and install KOReader. At that point, you can still use the Kindle's renderers for azw3/KF8 or KFX but most people seem to stick to reading ePubs using KOReader.
Several people have registered their Kindle, jailbroken it and then after testing, de-registering the device and just left it in airplane mode.
