In order to populate series, you have to connect your Kobo back to your calibre library after your eBooks have been imported.

The first time you connect calibre, you add the books to your Kobo. Then you eject and the books are imported to the database. The next time you connect to your calibre library, calibre can find the books in your library and add the additional metadata to the database.

It;s best suggested that you install NickelMenu so you can do the second connection to USB without having to unplug/plug the USB cable.
