There is an either/or in what I wrote. You can
either modify each .yaml file in the src directory individually
or you can edit the overrides section in the kobopatch.yaml (saving a copy of the kobopatch.yaml for later use since copying the files from the .zip file will overwrite it).
The only way to modify your Kobo's firmware is to generate a KoboRoot.tgz file, copy it to your Kobo's .kobo directory and let it be installed. To generate a KoboRoot.tgz file with your desired patches, you need to select the patches to be used prior to the kobopatch.sh/kobopatch.bat being run to generate the KoboRoot.tgz to be installed on your Kobo ereader.
For me, installation is when I copy the KoboRoot.tgz to my Kobo ereader. Unzipping the kobopatch .zip file is not (IMNSHO).
