Mostly, though, my problem with movies of books is that really good book series are often a huge letdown in the translation and often don't get past a single movie because of poor audience response.

My absolute all time favourite movie

(might have something to do with having a massive crush at the time on Ariana Richards the actress who played Lex, nothing weird I'm the same age as her just about)
I usually prefer the books to the movies (if the book came first and isn't just a write up of the movie) but Jurassic Park is the one instance where I think I like both equally but for different reasons. The book if I remember rightly was more 'technical' in that it delved into the hows and why's of cloning more but the movie had Ariana Richards in it! Oh and I think it had dinosaurs as well

But on a serious note, the movie didn't get as technical as the book but like you I think they really nailed the SFX in it and the way they portrayed the dinosaurs, you could quite easily believe there really were dinosaurs roaming around chomping on people and spitting in their faces. And that roar as Rex'y is just about to stomp ten barrels of whatsit out of the Ford Explorer tour vehicle the kids were in.
Side note and may be of interest to some: Ariana Richards is now a successful artist (painter)
