That's the most important, a lot of cat owners teach the habit of aggressive play. My eldest daughter's SO tormented their kitten & could not understand why it only attacked him.

Or as an alternative to a water pistol cats do not enjoy a blast of air in the face a mini bicycle pump is ideal and non harming.
