There is no Kindle version of any version of epub in reality.

Mobi from places other than Amazon can include azw3.

Surely it's more about data gathering than serving the user.

azw3 vs KFX visual differences are an Amazon political / marketing decision. An azw3 can be pretty nearly identical to the epub sent to Amazon by a Publisher. A KFX file is made from the same source as azw3. Any "obsoleting" of azw3 or superiority of KFX for reflowable novels is a cosmetic Amazon decision. Not having epub support on Kindles for the last 15 years is also political.
