Isn't AZW3 a proprietary format too?
I deal with a few other sources (Smashwords, BookFunnel, etc) and last I recall they used to provide a MOBI download, but in more recent times have provided a Kindle variant of EPUB3, if they provide anything Kindle at all. Sometimes they also provide PDF.
The MOBI aspect is surely nefarious.
