Another advantage is that the Calibre itself is more reliably updated. Last year, jgoguen took a holiday break leaving behind a rather annoying bug in the plugin that caused spaces to run together.

Other plugins are outright abandonware (Kobo Utilities before Majutsushi took it over, all of DaltonST's plugins) and have various broken functions.
