If the reason to turn off the plugboard can be determined from the book metadata then use a General Program Mode template to check and do the appropriate thing. You could go as far as to add a Yes/No custom column to books to tell the plugboard template what to do.

If it can't be determined from the metadata then you are stuck with what you are currently doing.
