For those who might like to know.

I've made about a dozen ebook purchases at Amazon since the 26th, one of those being a paid pre-order, the rest were freebies.

On Windows 7 with the last version of calibre that supports that OS and the last DeDRM plugin that supports that version of calibre, I was able to get my ebooks after a wifi download to my old E-Ink Kindle Keyboard device. I simply browsed the 'documents' folder on my device and imported into calibre, and now I am no longer beholden to a Kindle device.

I'd never used that method before and it worked well, and it really was a deciding factor for me, an experiment, to see whether I would continue to acquire ebooks from Amazon ... at least until I setup something on Windows 11, and providing Amazon don't screw things up meanwhile.
